The CAD/Design/Drafting Competition is a contest designed for senior high students. The contest provides recognition to students for creative design, successful problem solving, and craftsmanship in preparing architectural drawings. Entries are evaluated for detail, accuracy and originality of work.

Objectives of the contest are to introduce the student to the construction industry in a positive and challenging manner, while fostering
a sense of self-worth and building confidence. Mentoring programs between students and educators are also encouraged.
Each chapter is furnished with a "Design Problem" that is designed by a licensed Architect or Engineer and is generic enough to meet the needs of all areas of the US and our international affiliates. Project drawings must include, as a minimum, a floor plan, exterior elevation, and site plan with the placement of the structure. Prizes are awarded to the winners.

CAD/Design/Drafting Competition 2007-2008:

The Design Problem:

For the design problem this year the students are being asked to design a dentist office. For a more complete description of the competition rules and current design problem, go to www.nawiceducation.org for the national CAD/Design/Drafting web page.

Local Competition:

The success of this competition is mostly because of the dedication of our local high schools and drafting instructors. With their guidance and help, 67 students submitted plans for this competition.

All of the teachers and many students with their families were present for the Awards Program held April 5th, 2008 at the Regional Building Department. A special thanks again to Classic Homes for their continued support as a corporate sponsor of this competition. We would also like to thank the judges and NAWIC Chapter 356 volunteers for making this event a success. Every student that attended was rewarded with a gift card and goodies from our members.

Competition History:
Colorado Springs Chapter 356 held its first CAD/Design/Drafting Competition in the spring of 1998, only one year after it was chartered.  Over the past years, the competition has grown to include seven area high schools and over thirty entries submitted for judging.  An annual awards ceremony is held each year in April to display the entries, announce the winners, and award cash prizes.

In 1999, Jason Heard, from Rampart High School, went on to win both the regional and national competitions.  He is currently studying architecture in Wyoming.  In 2002, both of our first place winners, Jessica Hehr of Coronado High School, and Cristina Rustenbach, from Rampart High School, went on to win first place in the Regional Competition and took fourth place in their respective divisions at the national level.  Both of these young women also plan to study architecture.

Colorado Springs Chapter 356 won a 1st place Construction Industry Award for the 2001-2002 CAD/Design/Drafting Competition.   The award is given for a project that "teaches, improves or clarifies understanding and public awareness of the construction industry".  The award was presented at the NAWIC Annual Meeting and Convention held in Nashville, TN, on September 6, 2002.
