Hard Hat Tour

Thursday, July 17, 2008

UCCS Science & Engineering Building

The new SciencelEngineering Building (a LEED-accredited facility) will include approximately 155,566 SF on five levels with a variety of teaching, research and office spaces. The project began in September 2006 and is scheduled for occupancy in time for fall courses 2009. This is the largest single project in UCCS history ($45 million) with everything from lab space and cooling storage systems to a K-12 education center and smart classrooms. Significant components include research and teaching laboratories for the sciences (Biology, Physics), engineering, and interdisciplinary research groups, general classrooms, offices and innovative interaction spaces.

Wet laboratories will include significant utility infrastructure systems. Engineering laboratories will primarily consist of physical science types, including computational equipment, some heavy vibration sensitive equipment and other specialized laboratories with related utility infrastructure. Everyone from professors, administrators and staff to El Pomar's Institute for Innovation and Commercialization joined with architects, contractors and other professionals to make the design become a reality. The new building will include a bridge connecting it to the existing Engineering complex which made the sequencing of the structural steel vital. GH Phipps strategically left a center section of the building steel out so the crane could be moved to erect the bridge.

Cost - $15.00
