2007 NAWIC Spirit Award Recipient

Congratulations to Chapter 356 member, Dodi Walch, CCA, CIT, CDT, on being awarded the 2007 NAWIC Spirit Award.

Last year's Spirit Award winner, Diane Watson, CCA, CIT, presented the award at the September General Membership Meeting using these words:

It is a pleasure, as last year’s recipient of the Colorado Springs Chapter 356 NAWIC Spirit Award, to present this award to this year’s recipient.

In many ways, the name of this year’s award winner is synonymous with NAWIC. She is a great believer in the purpose of NAWIC and has spent her entire ten years as a member of NAWIC promoting its causes and participating fully not only the chapter level, but also at the regional and national levels. It is only fitting that the actual award
be presented this weekend at the Annual Planning Conference in El Paso, Texas. She is a hard woman to pin down – and this seemed to be the only way to get the award into her hands in a timely fashion!

Dodi Walch, CCA, CIT, CDT, is a charter member of the Colorado Springs Chapter 356 and has served as president of our chapter for two terms during its ten year existence. In addition, she has chaired or served on just about every committee there is, including being resident parliamentarian and the expert in strategic planning. In addition, she has supported and promoted the mission of the NAWIC Education
Foundation not only within the chapter and the region as liaison, but also currently serves as the national NEF treasurer.

Dodi has actively sought to improve her knowledge of the construction industry through her diligent study and completion of her CIT and CCA certifications. As a member of The Construction Specifications Institute, she also obtained her CDT certification.
Dodi has represented our chapter well at regional and national functions, attending virtually all forums and conferences during her time as a NAWIC member. Not only has she brought back valuable information from these events to our chapter members, but she has also provided us with such memorable events as train-hopping, pavement diving, and too -numerous-to-mention road trip adventures. Dodi – thanks for the memories!

Seriously, Dodi has been an inspiration to many Colorado Springs chapter members. She is loyal and hard working – and shows an incredible knowledge, strength and integrity in everything she undertakes – her work, her NAWIC responsibilities, and her friendships. She encourages members, both old and new, to get involved in NAWIC – because she knows the benefits that she has gained from her membership with NAWIC. She has been a role model for me, and a true friend – and for that I will be eternally grateful.

I present the 2007 NAWIC Spirit Award for the Colorado Springs Chapter 356 to Dodi Walch, CCA, CIT, CDT.

2006 NAWIC Spirit Award Recipient

The 2006 NAWIC Spirit Award was presented to
Diane Watson, CCA, CIT, a member of Chapter 356 since November of 1998, on September 21, 2006

The award was presented by
President Linda Champlin-Frank using these words:

Once again, the Spirit Award Committee had a hard decision to make with four deserving nominees received. After discussion, the choice was unanimous and I will now tell you a little about the winner.

This lady is a great asset to our organization. She always shows integrity in all she does and she cares very much about NAWIC and our chapter. She is always there to help out in any situation. We can always count on her.

With her own business and the field she is in, she is continually learning aspects of the construction industry. In continuing her education, she has also attained her CCA and CIT. She attends regional and national functions and the educational seminars presented at those events.

She is very loyal and always shows support of all fellow members. She is always available when needed, whether it be a NAWIC function or just as a friend to listen and help out with a problem and to give encouragement. She has helped our chapter accomplish local, regional and national recognition. She is truly an inspiration.

She is a Past President, was CAD Chair of our chapter for several years making it the success it is today, CAD Regional Chair last year and has taken on CAD National this year. She was responsible for creating the CAD problem the students will be working on and she will do the National judging. She is also our on-going Communications Chair maintaining our chapter award winning website, publishing The Centerline, our monthly chapter newsletter and she created and maintains the Region 8 website. This is dedication and while this takes a lot of her time, she still involves herself in any other projects our chapter participates in as time allows.

Thank you Diane Watson for all you do and I now would like to present you with the 2006 NAWIC Chapter 356 Spirit Award.

2005 NAWIC Spirit Award Recipient

The 2005 NAWIC Spirit Award was presented to
Angelique Kallio, CIT, a
member of Chapter 356 since March of 2004, on September 15, 2005.

The award was presented by Kate Muniz, CCA, CIT, the 2004 Spirit Award recipient.

This year, the Spirit Award committee faced a challenging task.  With three deserving nominees, we realized that our chapter has reached a new level.  We have choices!  In the end after much discussion, our choice was a unanimous one.xx

Our 2005 Spirit Award winner dedicates herself to NAWIC.  When she says she will serve on a committee, or take on a task, she does it completely, with sincerity and intensity!  She attends every event she can and has served on many committees, even chairing one.  Since she has been a member, which has only been 19 months, she has enthusiastically shown up for every event that she can.  She is always willing to help.

One of the nomination forms said this about her:  “She is a very positive person and finds good in those around her.”  That sums her character up.  You can’t get her to say a negative thing about someone!  Not that I’ve tried!  But you know, some people talk.  But not her.  She is our friend, and will stand for each of us always.  We are comfortable with her in that our faults are not what she sees.

I got to know her when she decided to take an NEF test.  She studied so hard, and so intensely.  She was worried about asking me too many questions or taking too much of my time.  I enjoyed spending time with her then, and I enjoy spending time with her now.  She passed, by the way!

Not only has she encouraged growth in our chapter, but has also been responsible for recruiting members from her company to the Denver chapter as well.

She not only attends functions, but gets her employer to sponsor them!  When she was asked to attend forum, she wholeheartedly got involved, and brought her employer’s sponsorship money with her.

Angelique loves NAWIC, and it is apparent.

2004 NAWIC Spirit Award Recipient

The 2004 NAWIC Spirit Award was presented to
Kate Muniz, CCA, CIT, a
charter member of Chapter 356, on September 16, 2004.

The award was presented by Katie Trapp, the 2003 Spirit Award recipient.

Kate Muniz has the spirit that promotes NAWIC in the community as well as the organization.  Her encouragement and "you can do it" support awakens our chapter into accomplishing projects worth local, regional and national recognition. Her excitement, energy, and enthusiasm gets everyone involved.
xx

Kate is driven to learn all that she can about the Construction Industry and has her CIT, CCA, and is getting ready to take the CDS. She is a Charter Member and has been involved in the leadership of our Chapter as President, Vice President, Secretary, Membership Chair, NEF Chair, Nominating Committee Chair, Publicity, and supports every committee activity.  She has attended national, regional and strategic planning forums.
xx
Kate stepped up to lead this chapter when no one else would and brought it through a difficult period.  She put the building spirit into us when she planted the idea of constructing a playhouse for CASA.  It didn't stop with that either - she opened her home, lent us her tools, shared her family, and worked through sweat and tears to bring it to fruition.
xx
She gives of herself constantly and is always there for you.  She is a true friend
and has taught us what the NAWIC spirit is all about.

2003 NAWIC Spirit Award Recipient

The 2003 NAWIC Spirit Award was presented to Katie Trapp, a five year member of Chapter 356, on September 18, 2003, prior to the installation of the 2003-2004 board.  Cathy Andrew, the inaugural recipient of the award in 2002, presented the award with these words:

“SPIRIT” has many meanings…being of dedicated character...having a strong loyalty…the nature of a person…integrity...generosity, to name a few.

This is how [Katie] is seen by her fellow members:

Incredible integrity…always, and I mean always, a positive person…a sense of camaraderie… has a “can do” attitude…encourages other to strive…her commitment to her word is unmatched….kindness and respect…is there when you need help…and when you think she’s done it all – she gives more.

Her energy and enthusiasm are contagious.  She never puts herself front and center but stays in the background and works hard.  She enjoys learning about the construction world and loves to teach what she knows to others.  She is always thinking about her fellow members and often times she brings food to committee functions.  Her willingness to bring in community support for our NAWIC events is wonderful.

Her involvement while serving on numerous committees is an inspiration to us all.  Not only has she unselfishly supported and participated for a number of years on the Playhouse committee, CAD/Drafting Design Contest, Women In Construction Week, … and Block Kids, but as in true NAWIC spirit, she stepped up to the “work bench” and has chaired one of these committees for several years now.  Amongst all this, she had time to be a secretary for our chapter.

As a dedicated and compassionate member of NAWIC, she is always getting the word out that NAWIC is part of the Colorado Springs community.  She does this by going to the local schools and libraries to talk to the teachers and kids about construction as a career choice for all including girls.  Through NAWIC Block Kids program, she encourages them to build with Legos, and create buildings for their future.  As a former teacher herself, she knows how to reach the young — and children are our future.

With all that she does and more, we believe [Katie] embodies the NAWIC spirit, and is an inspiration to us all.  Congratulations, Katie!

2002 NAWIC Spirit Award Inaugural Recipient
Cathy Andrew, four year member of NAWIC Chapter 356, was the inaugural recipient of the “NAWIC Spirit Award”. The award was presented at the General Membership Meeting on October 17, 2002.

Cathy has served on numerous committees and chaired others - Membership, CAD/Drafting Design Competition, WIC Week, Publicity, Block Kids, Playhouse, you name it. She has worked on all these committees and worked hard. She gives of herself tirelessly.
Cathy earned this award for things that went beyond her work as a committee member or committee chair. Her love of learning and her desire to constantly grow, her ability to find the best in every situation and every person, her humor and her humility, these were the things that she brings to us as a chapter and as individuals that make her so special to us. In fact, the award itself was inspired by this amazing woman. It is our hope that all of us will strive to earn this award each year by being more like Cathy Andrew. We believe that she truly embodies the NAWIC Spirit.
